Neuropsychological: brain functioning

Advanced Neuropsychological Treatment Services (ANTS) is a provider of neuropsychological assessment and neuropsychological treatment services for those with known or suspected difficulties with brain functioning.

Our assessments are rehabilitation-focussed, with a key goal of improving brain functioning, either directly via cognitive remediation strategies, or indirectly via compensating effectively for any weaknesses that may be present.

ANTS assessment and treatment services are client-focussed. We believe strongly that the primary beneficiary of the results of a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment should be the person undergoing the assessment (and/or their carer). All too often doctors, allied health staff, or even solicitors, end up with the information and the client is left out of the loop about the results of their own assessment. ANTS clients will leave an assessment session feeling empowered about how they can improve their neuropsychological functioning.

ANTS assessment and treatment services are grounded in the latest scientific knowledge of brain functioning. The activity of ANTS clinicians is overseen by senior clinical neuropsychologists, who ensure that all assessments and treatments are based on strong scientific evidence.

Who will benefit from a Neuropsychological Assessment?
Traditionally, neuropsychological assessment was available only to those with acquired brain injuries (e.g., traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumours). Neuropsychological assessment has become recognised as the most sensitive examination for detecting early dementia (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Vascular, Fronto-Temporal dementia). The role of neuropsychological assessment in assisting with diagnosis, treatment and management of mental health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, schizophrenia) has increased significantly in the last decade. Developmental conditions (e.g., Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s Disorder, Learning Disorder) tend to have persisting effects into adulthood, which may differ to those experienced in childhood. Neuropsychological assessment can assist in the diagnosis, treatment and management of the adult forms of these conditions.

So, those with known or suspected acquired brain conditions, developmental conditions, mental health conditions or dementia would benefit most from a neuropsychological assessment. Those who fall outside of these categories may also derive significant benefit from having a comprehensive assessment of their attentional, intellectual, memory and executive abilities.
