Acquired Brain Injury

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) refers to brain conditions that a person was not born with. ABI could be due to:
  • Trauma (Traumatic Brain Injury)
  • Stroke
  • Alcohol and other drugs (Substance-Related Brain Injury)
  • Multiple Sclerosis and other Neurodegenerative Diseases
  • Lack of Oxygen supply to the brain (Hypoxic Brain Injury)
  • Brain Tumour / Neurosurgery
  • Brain Infection (e.g., AIDS, Herpes)

Dementia refers to a neurodegenerative process by which a person experiences cognitive and functional decline. Such decline is over and above the gradual decline experienced in normal ageing. As such, it can be difficult to determine when a person is in the early stages of dementia.

Although Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD) is a disorder that is usually first diagnosed in and associated with childhood, approximately two thirds of those that meet criteria for the condition in childhood continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. Also, ADHD is a condition that has increasingly become conceptualised as neuropsychological (i.e., brain-based) in nature. Several findings from the scientific literature support this.
